Parenting in the Digital Age

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. - Philippians 4:8

How do we as parents plan to steward our children in this digital age? Our youngest generation, now referred to as iGen’ers, is facing a barrage of challenges for which few parents are prepared. Being raised in the era of the smartphone, they are the most digitally-connected and technology-addicted generation we have seen.

Without an intentional plan of how to introduce and harness our amazing and potentially life-controlling technologies, our children are at risk of becoming one of the growing numbers of kids ever-connected yet isolated. They will be prematurely exposed to adult content yet forever stay in the bog of adolescence. It is imperative that we safeguard our children’s biblical world view from the onslaught of secular, anti-god, postmodern philosophy headed their way.

Although the challenges and threats are great, the use of the technologies of this digital age and the platforms by which people communicate are inevitably going to be part of our lives. If completely avoided, we have a more limited means of connecting with a world who is in desperate need of Jesus Christ. We must learn to live in this new world, yet not be of this world. I think Paul hits on this idea when in 1 Corinthians he says “I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel the I may share with them in its blessings”. May we not shrink back, but run head first into this challenge that we may point this generation to their only hope, Jesus Christ.
